Supervisors of Student Employees

Student Employment offers a wonderful opportunity for supervisors to accomplish their department goals while giving students valuable out-of class learning opportunities. As a student employee supervisor, you are an important part of the campus community and your work is greatly appreciated. To enrich the student employment supervisor experience, the Student Employment Office has created the below training schedule with additional topics that will be added throughout the year. Supervisors are strongly encouraged to attend one of the below trainings.

EMPLOYING A PEPP STUDENT: SUPERVISOR ESSENTIALS

* Additional training dates will be added each month

Whether you are new to supervising or a seasoned supervisor this training will equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel as a Student Supervisor at Pepperdine. This training will review supervisor expectations, the student hire process, timecard approvals, and on boarding best practices. Collaborate and learn from other supervisors across departments in this engaging session.

ELEVATE YOUR STUDENT EMPLOYEE'S POTENTIAL: MENTORING & COACHING

Join Human Resources and Student Employment as we discuss leadership, mentorship, and coaching. In this interactive session, we will share the differences between training, mentoring, and coaching, as well as provide supervisors with tools to support the development and growth of their student employees. Elevate your student employee's potential and take your leadership skills to the next level!

STUDENT WELLNESS AND MENTAL HEALTH

Join us for some time with the Counseling Center to discuss the stressors facing our students as they return to school this year. We will learn more about college mental health, the effects of the pandemic, and how we might support them as developing professionals in the workplace.

Join Pepperdine's Office of Student Accessibility in a discussion of creating accessible workspaces and environments for student employees with disabilities. We will explore how Pepperdine's commitment to belonging includes students who may think, process, create, interact, or learn differently in the workplace. Please come with questions and experiences to share.

WHAT'S DEI GOT TO DO WITH ME?: UNDERSTANDING HOW TO SUPPORT STUDENT EMPLOYEES

Do you currently serve as a student employee supervisor and want to deepen your cultural competency? In this training, participants are invited to learn, unpack, and explore how social identities can impact the workplace and specifically, supervisor-student employee relationships. Participants will gain skills in developing and maintaining positive supervisor-student employee interactions. All are welcomed.

Terra N. Hall, Ph.D. is a scholar-practitioner with nearly 20 years of experience in higher
education and currently serves as Associate Dean of Student Affairs for Diversity and Belonging
at Pepperdine University. She was educated at Howard University, University of Pennsylvania,
and University of Maryland, College Park. Her scholarship, teaching, and practice are centered
on amplifying and supporting marginalized communities and experiences in the academy, with
an emphasis on race and spirituality. She is guided by her faith, leaning on Luke 1:45, and the
unwavering support of her family and friends, including her husband, Brant, and two sons, Brant
Jr., and Chandler.
