History

Built in the 1760s, Château d’Hauteville reflects the artistic influences of its era and features architectural and decorative elements that distinguish it as one of the region’s notable historic estates.

The property evolved over generations through careful expansion and refinement and remained in private stewardship for centuries, including more than two hundred years under the Grand d’Hauteville family, before Pepperdine acquired the estate in 2019. Designated a Class 1 Historic Monument, the château is protected at Switzerland’s highest level of historic designation. Pepperdine is committed to preserving its heritage while thoughtfully adapting the site to support academic life and community engagement.

The Renovation Process

Following its acquisition in 2019, Pepperdine undertook a comprehensive, multi-year renovation and restoration of Château d’Hauteville, guided by historic preservation and sustainability experts.

The first phase of renovations began in spring 2020 and focused on restoring the estate’s two primary buildings, the château and the Orangerie. The project culminated in the campus’s official grand opening in July 2023, with undergraduate students welcomed to the château in fall 2023.

Today, the main château serves as a living and learning center for undergraduate students. It includes classrooms, study areas, community and recreational spaces, a dining area, administrative offices, and a faculty apartment. Student bedrooms and additional study spaces are located on the upper floors.
