RISE Coaching

RISE Coaching seeks to help you identify and/or achieve your resilience-related goals. Whether you want to work on taking charge of your finances, making friends, or getting more sleep, RISE coaches stand ready to support you in your resilience journey! Coaching is a partnership between the coach and the student in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires the student to maximize potential. It is designed to facilitate the development of resilience goals and to carry out a strategic plan for achieving those goals. Sign up for RISE coaching here!

RISE Lunch & Learn: Healthy Eating and Movement

Wednesday, April 17
12 - 1 pm, TCC 290

Join RISE student employees, Annaileen and Zach, this Wednesday, April 17th, starting at 12pm for a lunch and learn that focuses on healthy eating and movement. The first 10 people to register through the link in our Instagra bio @pepperdinerise also get free SunLife.

RISE Yoga Retreat, Spring 2024

Saturday, April 13
10 - 2 pm, Light House

Come ready to be rejuvenated and educated about the important impact of yoga on the human body and its ability to expand our capacity for resilience. This event is open to all students, faculty, and staff.

Below you will find the schedule of events for our retreat!

Attendance is not mandatory throughout the entire event, so guests can feel free to drop in or step out whenever their schedule requires. Registration is required. The first 25 students to register and attend the event will receive a RISE Yeti tumbler. One additional RISE Yeti tumbler will be raffled off to any faculty/staff in attendance. Attendees are encouraged to bring a yoga mat or towel, but yoga mats will also be available.

RISE Lunch & Learn: Dream High Then Fly

Wednesday, April 10

Join RISE on Wednesday, April 10 from 12:30pm-1:30pm in PLC 167 to learn about turning your dreams into reality and overcoming the mental barrier that may be stopping you from accomplishing your goals. RISE Lunch and Learn: Crafting Connections

Wednesday, April 10
12 - 1 pm, AC 286

Join us for another RISE Lunch and Learn event that will teach students about resilience regarding building intentional relationships in college and maintaining them. This session will include topics such as developing better skills in creating relationships and communication/conflict management. Food will also be provided! We hope to see you there!  Food Provided (Chick-Fil-A sandwiches for the first 15 attendees!)

Did you know that creating art is good for your mental health? Did you know that creating art with friends is even better for your mental health? As we finish the semester strong, we invite you to join RISE & Dr. Khanh Bui for a meal and an art workshop meant to de-stress and foster cognitive and social resilience. The workshop will include free Chipotle, a coffee vendor, and limited edition RISE t-shirts.

RISE Summit

Wednesday, February 21

The RISE Summit is RISE’s annual conference-style event that celebrates resilience in the Pepperdine community. Each year, the event features students, faculty, staff, and outside speakers who share compelling stories of resilience to inspire our community. This year, the RISE Summit will focus on the Spiritual Dimension of resilience, and our speakers' stories will focus on moving through past or ongoing personal challenges by leaning on their faith. 

This year, in partnership with Pepperdine faculty Dr. John Peterson and the NetVUE Grant, the RISE Summit will feature Dr. Deanna A. Thompson as the keynote speaker!

There will be two RISE Summit sessions: 

Lunch Keynote Session | 12-1:30PM | Fireside Room
Dinner Panel Session | 6-8PM | The Light House

We hope that you will join us for this meaningful time of fellowship, storytelling, capacity building, delicious food, fun merch, and great prizes! For more details (such as keynote speaker, student panelists, merch reveal, and prizes), check out the RISE Instagram @pepperdinerise!

Hike to Sandstone Peak with RISE, Outdoor Rec, & GSEP

December 3, 2023
2 - 6:30 pm, Sandstone Peak

Want a break before studying for finals? Join us Sunday, December 3rd for a sunset hike to Sandstone Peak with Outdoor Recreation, RISE, and Pepperdine graduate schools. A moderate hike lasting 6.3 miles with stunning views at the highest point in the Santa Monica mountains. Engage in a conversation on resilience and correcting irrational thoughts.⁠

Transportation will be provided for those who need it. We will finish the hike with Lily’s burritos after!

Are you struggling with being productive and overusing technology? Join us Wednesday, November 29th, for a time to eat and converse about how you can create new skills in time management and technology discernment. Come join us for a Lunch & Learn as we go over how to navigate challenges while studying abroad. Adulting Bingo

October 25, 2023
6:30 - 8 pm, Mullin Town Square

Adulting can be scary, so join RISE at this fun Halloween-themed Adulting Bingo on Wednesday, October 25th from 6:30-8 pm at Mullin Town Square!

Focusing on the life skills and social dimensions of resilience, join RISE for a night of bingo, exciting prizes, great food, and spooktacular fun while learning about time, money, and technology management with some old friends and new. The first 25 students to arrive will receive a "remember to recharge" power bank (students must be among the first 25 to arrive AND be registered for the event).

Halloween-themed outfits are encouraged! Break out those jack-o'-lantern socks and punny Halloween shirts and face your fears against adulting with RISE! All first-year students who participate will win points for House Cup! Registration is required on Peppervine as there will only be 150 bingo seats available!

ICA x RISE Impostor Syndrome Workshop

January 26, 2023
5 – 6:30 pm, PLC 157

Join ICA and RISE on Thursday, January 26th from 5-6:30 pm in PLC 157 for a workshop on impostor syndrome led by Director of Student Ministries, Cameron Gilliam. Participate in a discussion and workshop that explores the ways in which impostor syndrome can be addressed/overcome in academic spaces as a student leader. This interactive lecture will also focus on the cognitive dimension of resilience; taking a deeper dive into fixed vs. growth mindset and changing irrational thoughts.

Registration is required as only 30 spots are available. Dinner from Mendocino Farms will also be provided.

RISE x Outdoor Rec Sunset Hike to the Cross

January 23, 2023
3:30 pm, Meet @ end of Baxter Drive

Join RISE and Outdoor Recreation on a special sunset hike to the cross. This is a moderate to difficult hike (2.5 miles round trip) with spectacular views of the ocean and the entire campus. It's also one of the best sunset viewing points in Malibu!

Registration is required as only 40 spots are available. The group will meet at the trailhead (the end of Baxter Drive). Light hiking snacks will be provided. Follow @pepperdinerise and @pepperdine.outdoor.rec for additional event updates.

RISE x Crossroads GSA x Feminist Club Craft Night

Join RISE, Crossroads, and the Feminist Club for an evening of crocheting and scrapbooking while learning about resilience and the history of textile work on Wednesday, November 30th from 6:30-8:30 pm in the Fireside room.

Enjoy some treats from Cafe de the Plague, and all those in attendance will be entered to win some fun prizes including a $25 Amazon gift card and one of 2 self care baskets including loose leaf tea, tea infusers, thinking putty, coloring book, fine line markers, and face sheet masks.

Every Other Friday

Do you like crafts? Do you want a space to just be around others and enjoy the company of being alone together? Crafternoons are the place for you! 

Join RISE and the Counseling Center every other Friday for a time of peaceful crafting and resilience. There will be paper, origami books, coloring pages, color pencils, and crayons available. Feel free to bring your own crafting projects (knitting, sewing, cross stitching, painting, etc.) if you'd like as well! 

A RISE representative and staff from the Counseling Center will be available at every session.

Be on the lookout for a featured craft at each event!

BSA x APA x RISE Movie Night & Talkback (Black Panther 2)

November 16, 2022
3:30 – 9 pm, Regency Theatre/HAWC 200

In partnership with RISE, students will travel with BSA and APA to Regency Theatre in Agoura Hills to watch Black Panther 2 together as a group. Transportation will be provided to and from the event with a pick-up time of 3:30 pm (the pick-up location will be sent in a reminder email).

Upon return to campus, the group will gather in HAWC 200 for a talkback event over pizza. Registration is required as only 50 seats are available for this 2-part event. By registering to this event, students are agreeing to attend both the movie and talkback event.

Focusing on the spiritual and service dimensions of resilience, join RISE, Community Engagement and Service, and Worship Ministries in a day of service and a time to reflect and be in community at The Well on Thursday, October 13th.
First, join RISE and Community Engagement and Service at Lower Mullin Town Square from 11 am - 2 pm to help assemble care kits for PATH - an organization working to end homelessness for individuals, families, and communities. The entire campus community is welcome to join in these service efforts, and all first-year students who participate will win points for House Cup!

In the evening, join RISE at the Well (8 pm at the Amphitheatre). Worship and reflect on the heart of service with the Pepperdine community. All first-year students who attend will also win points for House Cup!

RISE is excited to invite you to our inaugural RISE Summit! We will have a Keynote speaker presentation, dinner, and the return of our famous Bingo!

The theme of RISE Summit is "Metamorphosis" - rooted in the idea that we are able to be renewed by the transforming of our minds and build healthier practices to help us be more resilient. Marv Dunphy, Head Coach Emeritus and Olympian, and Hung Le, Associate Vice President and Registrar, will serve as our dual keynote speakers for the Summit, to share their stories of transformation and resilience.

Lunch and Learn: Overcoming Mental Blocks

An event series where RISE provides lunch and students get to learn a new skill. For this event, Emily Luong, RISE student worker, will be leading a workshop on overcoming mental blocks/irrational thoughts! We will be talking about some strategies to combat perfectionism, worrying about the future, and catastrophizing events.
