Seaver College Standards of Conduct

The following examples of misconduct are not exhaustive but are intended to give students an idea of the types of behaviors that may result in disciplinary action. International Programs (IP) may establish additional conduct expectations that apply in that context. Students are responsible for complying with those requirements, which are set forth in any applicable handbook, policy, or program materials.

  1. Violation or attempted violation of published University policies, rules, or regulations. This includes, for example:
    1. Alcohol and Other Drugs
    2. Animals - (Also see HR Manual Section 37 - Animals on campus)
    3. Computer and Network Usage
    4. Discrimination and Harassment (for complaints against faculty/staff, see the Seaver College Non-Academic Student Grievance Procedure)
    5. Hazing
    6. Housing and Residence Life  (e.g., visitation, noise, decor, BHR, guests, etc.) 
    7. Personal Electric Transportation
    8. Pregnancy (not subject to disciplinary action, but included here for those who may inquire if it is)
    9. Sexual Misconduct
    10. Sexual Relationships
    11. Smoking (for the specific smoking policy within the residential community, see Smoking under the Housing and Residence Life Code of Conduct Policies; also HR Manual Section 36 - Smoke Free Campuses) 
    12. Unmanned Aircraft System (Drone) 
    13. Vehicles
  2. Violation of Federal, State, or local law on or off campus.
  3. Dishonesty in any form, including but not limited to, knowingly furnishing false information, forgery, plagiarism, alteration, or misuse of documents, records, or identification cards.
  4. Academic dishonesty, including but not limited to plagiarism, cheating, fabrication, facilitating academic dishonesty.
  5. Manufacture, sale, distribution, promotion, possession, or attempt to obtain false identification.
  6. Failure to comply with the written or verbal directives of University officials or law enforcement including but not limited to Public Safety officers, Resident Directors, and Resident Advisors acting within the scope of their responsibilities; failure to accurately identify oneself when requested to do so by such individuals; or interference with, avoidance of, obstruction of, or refusal to participate in University administrative, safety, housing, or disciplinary processes. This includes but is not limited to providing false information, avoiding or resisting documentation, or failing to comply with an issued sanction.
  7. Failure to possess at all times a valid student identification card and/or failure to surrender ID card to a University official upon request.
  8. Disruptive Behavior - Behavior that disrupts, interferes with, obstructs, or otherwise negatively impacts the academic environment, operations, or the community is prohibited. Students may be subject to disciplinary action for conduct that unreasonably interferes with the ability of others to participate in or benefit from University programs, services, activities, or residential living environments.  1. Disruption of University Activities - Disruption or obstruction of teaching, learning, research, administration, disciplinary proceedings, or other University activities, including public service functions conducted on or off campus, or authorized non-University activities occurring on University premises, is prohibited. This includes behavior that unreasonably interferes with, hinders, obstructs, or prevents other students from freely participating in University instruction, programs, services, activities, and the campus community.  2. Disruption of the Residential Community - Residents may be removed or suspended from University housing for failure to comply with University regulations, conduct that is disruptive to the residential community, or actions determined to be detrimental to the health, safety, welfare, or well-being of other residents or the broader campus community. Students removed or suspended from University housing may be prohibited from further access to or visitation within residential facilities.
  9. Soliciting, advertising, or inviting a member of the media, such as a reporter, to campus without prior approval from the appropriate University office.
  10. Retaliation, intimidation, or harassment, whether online or in person, for reporting alleged misconduct, participating in a University process, assisting another individual, or for any other improper purpose, is prohibited. Prohibited conduct also includes threatening behavior, hate violence, coercion, stalking, the use or threat of physical violence, or other conduct that threatens, harms, or unreasonably interferes with the safety, well-being, rights, or participation of another member of the University community or visitor to the campus. Allegations involving discrimination, harassment, stalking, sexual misconduct, or related retaliation may also be addressed under the University’s Discrimination and Harassment Policy or Sexual Misconduct Policy, as applicable.
  11. Any unauthorized use of electronic or other devices to make an audio, video, digital, or still image of any person without his/her prior knowledge, or without his/her effective consent.
  12. Activities that may cause damage or constitute a safety or health hazard or interfere with the educational process. Such activities include, but are not limited to, entering or exiting buildings through the windows; throwing, projecting, or dropping items that may cause injury or damage; improper disposal of sharps; and pranks that create safety and health hazards for others and/or cause damage to University or personal property.
  13. Exhibition, possession, distribution, or viewing of material or representations deemed to be obscene or contrary to the moral standards and/or mission of the University, including but not limited to pornography.
  14. Lewd behavior, nudity, or indecent exposure of any kind.
  15. Gambling is not allowed on campus or at University-sponsored activities.
  16. Participation in a student organization that has lost University recognition.
  17. Possession, use, display, or storage of weapons or dangerous materials, including weapons prohibited by California law, is prohibited on University property and at University-sponsored activities. Prohibited items include, but are not limited to, firearms, ammunition, explosives, dangerous chemicals, air guns, BB guns, pellet guns, paintball guns, knives, switchblades, brass knuckles, martial arts weapons, nunchaku, throwing stars, bows and arrows, swords, spearguns, or any item that replicates or could reasonably be mistaken for a real weapon. Possession or use of self-defense items, including pepper spray, must comply with applicable California law and University policy regarding possession and use.
  18. Unauthorized possession, duplication, or use of keys or entry devices to any University premises or unauthorized entry into or use of University premises.
  19. Attempted or actual theft of and/or damage to University property, property of a member of the University community, or other personal or public property on or off campus. This regulation covers the unauthorized appropriation or "borrowing" of property for personal use or the possession of stolen property.
  20. Vandalism, disrespect, destruction, defacement, or unauthorized decoration (e.g., chalking) of University property.
  21. Failure to uphold the University’s Code of Ethics or to engage in ethical, professional, and responsible conduct in connection with University-sponsored, University-affiliated, or University-related activities, programs, placements, employment, leadership roles, or interactions with external organizations or community members.  This includes, but is not limited to:
    a.  failure to act with honesty, integrity, professionalism, dignity, or respect;
    b.  failure to maintain appropriate professional or interpersonal boundaries;
    c.  violations of confidentiality or applicable legal or professional obligations;
    d.  or conduct that jeopardizes the safety, welfare, rights, or trust of others.
  22. Misuse of the disciplinary procedures, including but not limited to:
    1. Failure to respond to the notification letter(s) or any other correspondence issued by a disciplinary body or University official.
    2. Falsification, distortion, or misrepresentation of information before a disciplinary body.
    3. Disruption or interference with the orderly conduct of a disciplinary proceeding.
    4. Knowingly initiating a disciplinary complaint or proceeding without a reasonable basis or in bad faith.
    5. Attempting to discourage an individual's proper participation in, or use of, the disciplinary system.
    6. Attempting to influence the impartiality of a member of a disciplinary body prior to, and/or during the course of, the disciplinary proceeding.
    7. Harassment (verbal or physical) and/or intimidation of a member of a disciplinary body prior to, during, and/or after a disciplinary proceeding.
    8. Failure to comply with the sanction(s) imposed by a disciplinary body, including but not limited to failing to take a required substance-related test or assessment.
